From Rock Bottom to Purpose: The Story Behind Live Your Truth Yoga
My journey to the work I do today has been a lifelong pursuit of peace and genuine happiness while navigating clinical depression and anxiety. From an uncommonly young age, I felt its weight—though at six years old, with my limited understanding, I could only describe it as "my sad feeling."
Evolution Over Time
As a Child
As a child and teenager, basketball became my medicine, my escape. On the court, I found a sense of control, a reprieve from the torment in my mind. I became phenomenal, earning a full-ride scholarship to play college basketball at South Dakota State University. But the accolades and sense of worth I built around the sport were fleeting. Beneath it all, I was silently suffering.
Growing Up
By my second year, unmedicated and battling crippling depression, I knew I needed help. I went to my coach and told him I needed medical support. He dismissed me, warning that medication could affect my performance, reminding me that I was an asset to the institution because of my full scholarship. At first, I listened. But when my struggles inevitably impacted my game, he turned on me—berating me in practice, humiliating me publicly. The final breaking point was a day when recruits and press were on-site. After a missed opportunity on a play, he got in my face, slapped the back of my head, and screamed, “Get your head out of your ass.”
Broken Girl
I was a 21-year-old broken girl.
I knew I had to walk away—from basketball, my scholarship, school, and the identity I had built around it all. It was rock bottom. And it almost ended my life.
Seeking medical help was my turning point. Therapy and medication lifted the gray clouds, allowing me to see clearly for the first time. I transferred schools, finished my undergraduate degree, and earned an internship at the prestigious Mayo Clinic, studying and working in sports psychology. That experience ignited a new passion for understanding the mind. I excelled in personal training, pursued a graduate program in mental health counseling—but even then, something was missing.
I had explored healing through the body—sports, fitness, endurance training.
I had explored healing through the mind—psychology, therapy, academia.
Yet, I was still searching for something deeper.
Finding Yoga
Then I found yoga.
For the first time, I discovered an internal path to healing—one that wasn’t about pushing harder or achieving more but about being. Through breath, movement, and meditation, I realized that no one was coming to save me. I had to do that myself. And the experiences that once felt like devastation were actually the curriculum for my soul’s purpose.
This realization led to the birth of Live Your Truth Yoga—first in the jungles of Costa Rica, where I immersed myself in spiritual practice, and now, in the spaces I create for others seeking transformation.
